Theotokos of Embracing Love
This icon is based on an 18th Russian icon displayed during an iconography exhibit at the University of Arizona. Originally part of the iconostasis (the icon screen that separates the sanctuary from the nave) of a Russian Orthodox Church, the curator of the museum kindly gave me a slide of the original which I used to write this particular version. It is unusual to see icons of the Virgin without the child Jesus, and I felt immediately drawn to her pregnant arms, as if she were holding all creation within her fold. I have written two different versions of this icon.
