Lanzetta, Beverly. St. Ignatius of Loyola, natural pigments on gessoed pine board.
Ignatius of Loyola
16th century Spanish mystic and founder of the Jesuit order. Renowned for writing the Spiritual Exercises and for endorsing the education and missionary work of the Society of Jesus, Ignatius was deeply mystical and in love with the world. In this retablo, I wanted to convey the spiritual intensity of Ignatius and the wise gentleness of his heart. The subdued colors and simple lines are meant to evoke the saint’s whole focus on the one thing necessary: love of God.
