FOR THE MYSTICS WHO ARE POSSESSED BY THE DIVINE PRESENCE, human sin strikes at the very depth of the soul. Rumi captures the poetic essence of this existential truth:

We are the mirror as well as the face in it.
We are tasting the taste this minute
of eternity. We are pain
and what cures pain. We are
the sweet, cold water and the jar that pours.¹

It is always in relationship to the wounded face of others that we are pierced to the core of being in solidarity with the suffering on Earth.
