Weeping Tears of Fire

IN LIGHT OF THE NATURAL DISASTERS AND PERSONAL TRAGEDIES currently circling our lives, I am reminded of St. Catherine of Siena’s vision that the Holy Spirit “weeps tears of fire.”

The weeping of fire—what a way to say it, and something only someone who has been there could write—has no tears because it is the blaze of the spirit in us, drawing us to feel our helpless, hopeless attempts to make things “right.” We can all go crazy before we admit that we weep—yes we do—because of what we see and feel that breaks our hearts. This is the wound of love that flows through us and suffers in us the sweetness and pain of the world.

Yet, it is also the tears of fire that illuminate our hearts, reminding us of the beauty in everyday details, and inspire us, as Catherine says, to “love with the same pure love with which God loves you.”

May our prayers be imbued with daily graces.
