John of the Cross: Sixteenth century Spanish mystic and spiritual companion of St. Teresa of Avila. St. John is renowned for his spiritual wisdom and soul guidance. This retablo depicts his “noche oscura” (dark night) in which he writes of the soul’s transformation from suffering and loss of faith to that “glad night, that night more lovely than dawn.”
